VMware Collaborates with Canonical on OpenStack

Attendees at Portland’s OpenStack Summit this week have another reason to feel assured of their good judgment in backing the open source cloud operating system: former competitor VMware has kept its word and stated its support for OpenStack by working with Canonical to deploy its software with an OpenStack distribution.

Joshua Goodman, vice president, Product Management, vSphere stated, “By fulfilling our promise to deliver VMware vSphere support in OpenStack, and teaming with Canonical to serve our collective customers, we’re delivering customer choice by providing a powerful platform for those interested in OpenStack clouds.”

Four Students to Work on GIMP During GSoC2013 Program

GIMP will be taking part in this year’s Google Summer of Code program as a mentoring organization. We are inviting interested students to get in touch with us and start discussing potential projects.

Some project ideas have already been posted in the wiki, but you are free to come up with your own ones. At this point porting existing plug-ins to GEGL has the highest priority, as it will aid us in releasing GIMP 2.10 sooner.

If you are eligible for participation and eager to contribute to our project, please introduce yourself on the mailing list for developers or in the #gimp channel at irc.gimp.net. In the latter case please bear in mind that the core team is mostly in the Western Europe timezone.

Taking a stand on open source and patents

At Google we believe that open systems win. Open-source software has been at the root of many innovations in cloud computing, the mobile web, and the Internet generally. And while open platforms have faced growing patent attacks, requiring companies to defensively acquire ever more patents, we remain committed to an open Internet—one that protects real innovation and continues to deliver great products and services.

Today, we’re taking another step towards that goal by announcing the Open Patent Non-Assertion (OPN) Pledge: we pledge not to sue any user, distributor or developer of open-source software on specified patents, unless first attacked.

We’ve begun by identifying 10 patents relating to MapReduce, a computing model for processing large data sets first developed at Google—open-source versions of which are now widely used. Over time, we intend to expand the set of Google’s patents covered by the pledge to other technologies.

Open-Xchange Launches Open Source Browser-Based Office Productivity Suite, OX Documents

Open-Xchange, a disruptive open source software company, has announced the launch of OX Documents, a cloud-based office productivity suite, featuring OX Text, an in-browser word processing tool. OX Text offers direct editing capabilities for Microsoft Word .docx files and OpenOffice or LibreOffice .odt files. Multiple users can view and edit the same document in real time by sharing editor’s rights held by a single user at a given time, allowing for structured collaboration. OX Documents also provides viewing support for all major file formats.

A pioneering feature of OX Text is non-destructive support of Microsoft Office and OpenOffice or LibreOffice file formats. XML-based documents can be seamlessly read, edited and saved back to the original format at a level of quality and fidelity previously unavailable with browser-based text editors. OX Text will be joined by Presentation and Spreadsheet to complete the OX Documents Suite later in 2013……

Four Students to Work on GIMP During GSoC2013 Program

Yesterday Google announced Summer of Code 2013 program. Participating at GSoC has proved to be rather beneficial to us. Here are just some of the features implemented during past runs of the program: five new tools (Heal, Perspective Clone, Cage Transform, Warp Transform, Seamless Paste), resources tagging, hardware acceleration in GEGL. Needless to say, we’ll try to participate this year again.

We already have a preliminary list of project ideas for this year’s program: improving selection tools, implementing sophisticated slicing tool for web designers, creating a full-featured OpenEXR plug-in. However, the top priority project for us would be porting more plug-ins to GEGL, which is one of the issues that block the release of GIMP 2.10.

Even though we won’t know whether we are participating until April 8, if you are considering to work with us this summer, we suggest that you start talking to us already. When we vote for students, we need to know you well enough to make a fair judgment. Please find out if you are eligible for the program, then join the developers mailing list or talk to us on IRC.

Changes to the Support Forum

Hello everyone,

After using the SimpleInvoices Google+ community for development discussion over the past few months we have decided to move our general support forum over to Google+ too.

We will be making the existing forum read only in the near future and would ask that any new support requests be posted to the 'Support' section in the Google+ community.

This change should make it easier for the team to monitor support requests and ensure that nothing gets missed.
