Hortonworks Cofounder: Hadoop Rivals Cant Touch It|Dr.Dobbs | Dr Dobbs.

Hadoop is the best and most economical option for extracting value from massive data sets, according to Arun Murphy, Apache Hadoop project management committee chair. In addition, the up-and-coming data management platform has quickly become the “de facto standard” for big data, he claimed.

Given Murphy’s background, it’s not surprising he’s a bit biased in favor of Hadoop. One of the cofounders of Hortonworks, an enterprise software company focused on the development and support of Hadoop, Murphy has been a major participant in the open source project since its beginning in 2006.

“The exciting part of Hadoop — and the way things have gone the last 12 months or so — is that a lot of really big and important enterprise software companies are starting to work with it,” said Murphy.

Take Microsoft, for instance. At last week’s Strata Conference in New York, Microsoft announced the preview release of HDInsight Server for Windows, the first beta version of the company’s Hadoop software distribution. Read full story on InformationWeek

OpenOffice becomes Apache Top-Level Project

OpenOffice.org LogoThe Apache Software Foundation (ASF), the all-volunteer developers, stewards, and incubators of nearly 150 Open Source projects and initiatives, today announced that Apache Open Office has graduated from the Apache Incubator to become a Top-Level Project (TLP), signifying that the Project’s community and products have been well-governed under the ASF’s meritocratic process and principles.

“The graduation of OpenOffice is testament to The Apache Way successfully scaling from incubating ‘ingredient brands’ to a highly-established end-user product,” said ASF Executive Vice President and Apache OpenOffice mentor Ross Gardler. “The incubation process allowed experienced Apache contributors to mentor the project, helping both new and established OpenOffice contributors build an Apache-style community that is both open and diverse.”

“The OpenOffice graduation is the official recognition that the project is now able to self-manage not only in technical matters, but also in community issues,” said Andrea Pescetti, Vice President of Apache OpenOffice. “The ‘Apache Way’ and its methods, such as taking every decision in public with total transparency, have allowed the project to attract and successfully engage new volunteers, and to elect an active and diverse Project Management Committee that will be able to guarantee a stable future to Apache OpenOffice.”

KDE-Edu Project

The KDE-Edu project was started in July 2001.  The goal of the project is to develop Free Educational Software (GPL license) within the KDE environment.  This software is mainly aimed to schools,  to students and to parents at home as well as to adults willing to extend their knowledge.

A new KDE module was created, the kdeedu module.  The applications in that module are fully KDE compatible (use of KMainWindow, XML GUI, …)  and get a proper documentation handbook in docbook format.  Thus, all applications interfaces and documentation are translated in more than 65 languages,  via the l10n KDE teams.

The kdeedu module joined the KDE 3.0 official release.

Digging into the Open Source Geospatial Software and OpenGeo Suite 3.0

In October 2, OpenGeo released a major upgrade to the OpenGeo suite. The company expects users will be excited about enhancements in production and processing and a closer feature match to Esri’s ArcGIS Server. Rolando Peñate, OpenGeo’s product manager, answered our questions about open source geospatial software and the new release.

Python 3.3.0

Python 3.3.0 was released on September 29th, 2012.

Python 3.3 includes a range of improvements of the 3.x series, as well as easier porting between 2.x and 3.x.  Major new features in the 3.3 release series are:

  • PEP 380, syntax for delegating to a subgenerator (yield from)
  • PEP 393, flexible string representation (doing away with the distinction between “wide” and “narrow” Unicode builds)
  • A C implementation of the “decimal” module, with up to 120x speedup for decimal-heavy applications

  • The new “lzma” module with LZMA/XZ support
  • PEP 397, a Python launcher for Windows

open pc server integration – OPSI

opsi is a Client Management System for Windows clients based on Linux servers

The opsi key features are:

  • Automated software distribution and patch management (opsi client agent)
  • Automated OS installation (unattended or image based)
  • Hardware and software inventories
  • Support of multiple locations

1. Automated software distribution and patch management:

Automated and non-interactive software installation may reduce your cost of system administration. It increases the security of your system since you distribute and install service packs and security patches in time. The opsi client agent service checks if there is an installation request for any software or patch release. In this case the software will be installed on the PC using the script-based program opsi-winst, which initiates and controls the installation processes. This is normally done after every system boot and before the user login takes place.

2. Automatic OS installation: 

The operating systems Windows XP, 2003, Vista, Windows 7 and 2008(R2) (32/64 Bit) (Linux planned) can be installed automatically without any user interaction.

3. Hardware and software inventory: 

The opsi-tool hwaudit collects hardware information via WMI and sends it to the opsi-server. The results will be displayed in the opsi management interface. The data can be sorted according to several hardware criteria.

The opsi-tool swaudit collects software information from the PC’s registry and sends it to the opsi-server. The results can also be seen in the opsi management interface.

4. Support of multiple locations

Even with multiple locations opsi can be used. While storing and administrating the configuration data on one single server, the packages with the software can be deposited on several different depot server.

opsi server runs on Debian, Ubuntu, OpenSuse, SLES, CentOS, UCS and RHEL.

Postgres 9.2 invites large-scale enterprise deployment

The new Postgres database can be run across as many as 64 processor cores 

The open-source Postgres database continues to be refined for enterprises: The latest version, released Monday, contains a number of new features and performance enhancements designed to ease professional large-scale usage.

“Postgres has always done very well on personal computers, but with 9.2 it will run very nicely on very large servers,” said Tom Kincaid, director of global services for EnterpriseDB. EnterpriseDB, which offers a commercially supported version of Postgres, is a major contributor to the continued development of Postgres, also commonly referred to as PostgreSQL. “It will be in places it hasn’t been before.”
